Wow what an accomplishment in the last 4 years from going to the pits to making the WC making it out of groups and being dived out of a WC Semi final. Very proud of these guys. I know rankings don't mean much in football but it's an improvement and acknowledgment of how we have come so far.

Australia never made the quarters, they made the round of 16. If we didn't get robbed by the cheating italians we would have played Ukraine in the quarters.
Having said that, the fifa rankings are a bit misc, Czech republic was ranked #2 before the 2006 world cup and they didn't make it out of groups.
Still... a great achievement, ranked above portugal too.

Yeh tbh italy had the run of the mill even after going down to 10 men. Guus was playing for extra time since he hadn't used a substitute yet, unfortunately the gamble didnt pay off. When italy had 10 men we never really tested them.
This is all besides the point because 2006 world cup was a massive success and is burnt into the history books.
I don't think it's fair to call pim a 'terrible manager', that's something i would reserve for the likes of graham arnold. However I'm a little tired of the approach he has been taking and im not sure if it will pay off agaist a decent team. I guess we'll find out after a few friendlys. I'm just not convinced we have the ability to break down a top teams defence.
Time will tell!

imo pim is playing a bit of cat and mouse
honestly, given the talent of the squad, he knew a defensive approach would see us through qualification basically we would score off our own racket, perhaps his playing it that way to go into south africa with a new unseen attacking play.
tbh i think his main objective through qualification was strategy and not overwhelming success.

you can't compare friendlys to world cup.. doesn't matter what lineup.. One very good point was a "friendly" Macedonia vs. Spain. First half Spain were playing terrible (btw they had a very good lineup) the game looked like Macedonia had it. Second half you see the true Spaniards came out for 5 minutes scored 3 goals and stopped there because they were playing in Macedonia and saw it as a sign of respect not to demolish them on their own home ground infront of their own fans... VERY Misc fifa rankings.. Aus do have a good team but the team they are sporting now have nothing on the top 4 teams in the world Italy, Brazil, Portugal, Spain (imo).. Australia have never had the strikers to score the goals, the boys play so hard and deserve it but do not have the key "touch" as some would say.. but I am waiting to be proven wrong.. I hope I am!

i don't think anyone that actually knows anything about football thinks australia is any where near as good as those top teams or even teams like portugal.
